Finally arrived!

I just wanted everyone to know that Sebastian Alexander was born (via Cesarean) on January 19th, 2007 at 10:41 a.m. He weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. Mom and baby are doing well...and mom still hasn't knit anything for him! She should get started, since it's cold outside! =0)

Another Surprise Jacket

I've seen a bunch of these finished from you gals, and I just had to give one a try! It's for a work colleague whose baby is due on Friday. It is so much fun! It goes from this:

The yarn is from my stash (yeah me!). I have a bunch of this sport weight yarn, as I was planning on making a fairisle sweater from it. Besides the fact that I have decided fairisle isn't for me, I didn't realize how much it sucks to do fairisle in superwash wool. But - for little baby clothes, it's perfect. I'm hoping to be able to find little truck buttons so I can send this off tomorrow.

I finally finished this beanie from Natural Knits for Moms and Babies - it is the first cap for my bunny, my little girl due in April, and I know she will look darling in it. Now to make the matching booties...

new member...LOTS of baby knitting!

Hi,
I guess I should introduce myself...I'm Jennifer and I usually blog here. I'm due in May with our first child, a boy! My side is thrilled 'cus it's the first grandchild...his side would have preferred a girl as they already have 4 grandsons, but they are still happy for us. :)

I have been doing tons of baby knitting, both for myself and as gifts for others. I am going to catch up the stuff done to date here so in the future I will only have to add the new stuff. I'm warning you now, this will be a long post! I'll start from the oldest stuff and move towards the most recent.

This is a cardigan that was originally designed for Sirdar Snowflake yarn- the stuff that looks and feels like Polar. I changed to Patons Decor and added the stripes and some cute wooden buttons. It was my first sweater and it was knit for my husband's godson, the 3rd of his 4 nephews, who was 4 at the time. The sweater really does fit him well but he wasn't in a picture taking mood!

This is a baby blanket I knit over the summer 2006. My local knitting guild had was collecting baby blankets to raffle off for charity and I made this one, called the Harlequin Baby Blanket, out of Muench's Tessin yarn. (Great, squishy, springy cotton blend yarn!)

I made this once we found out we were pregnant. It's the Just Ducky hat and socks set and I used Diamond Tempo Worsted (75% acrylic, 25% wool).

It's been a year for babies and the next in line was my cousin's son Sean who was born in December. I knit this elephant for her baby shower in November. The pattern is from a book on Easy Knit Toys by Joy Gammon and it is the first pattern I have ever knit from a French pattern. (I didn't know the book was available in English at the time). I used Sirdar Country DK I think.

This was for another cousin's son Oliver, who was born over the summer but I was busy with my September wedding and didn't have a chance to work on it. It is the Betsey Brachiosaurus pattern from Family Circle's Baby Knits and I used Bernat Baby Coordinates.

This was for our son but knit before we found out he is a boy. It's the Froggy hat and socks pattern and was also knit with Diamond Tempo yarn.

This is Kate Gilbert's Samantha pattern that I knit for my friend who had a daughter in September. I used Sirdar Snuggly and adapted it with some intarsia for the two-color look.


This is a cardigan I started for our child before getting pregnant, even before our wedding. I like dark colors on babies and had no problems knitting a black cardigan, although I did size it for 2 years. It is the Ducks in a Row pattern from an old Patons Astra booklet but I omitted the duck motifs for a plain, raglan cardigan. I used the Astra yarn and found some cute 1-8 plastic buttons at my LYS.

I have about 3 more photos of baby knitting but Blogger wouldn't let me upload them so I'll post them in a few days.

I'm getting really inspired by seeing all the gorgeous baby knits you guys have done!

For Our First Grandchild

I finished this baby set quite some time ago but was waiting until I had matching booties made before photographing and blogging about it.



This set is for our first grandchild, due in March. As you can see there are no booties. I have decided to wait until the baby fits the sweater before making the booties. There is a bit of a story in that:

A couple of years ago (has it really been that long?!) I made this set twice, once for each of two grandnieces, and included booties I had designed to match. Not having had babies around for over 20 years, I was a little out of touch with how big the babies' feet would be when they were large enough to wear the sweater (a "six month" size), and the booties apparently fit far sooner than the sweater. On the other hand, I also designed the little hat and it fit at the appropriate time.

And now that I own Susan Anderson's Itty Bitty Hats, I'm ready for some serious baby hat knitting! Thank you, Alison, for the inspiration!

Toddler Skully Sweaters

Since I knit that one pink sweater for the little one (who might be a girl) still inside, I thought that probably I should also knit a sweater for each Big Brother. Here they are in their matching Skully Sweaters. I used the Wonderful Wallaby pattern, which was lots of fun. It's such a simple knit, and leaves a lot of room for creative additions. These were knit in the 2nd and 3rd sizes, to give my boys a little room to grow. They'll still fit in these next winter, which is key. =)

I will totally knit this again. Once this baby is born and I know what gender it is, I'll pick out appropriate colors.

I had to do some crazy "franken-knitting" of the larger sweater, which taught me a heck of a lot about knitted fabric. It's amazing what we can do with two sticks and some yarn (or four sticks, in this case). You can go to my blog to check out more pics and project details if you're interested.

Just purchased the Baby Basics Fiber Trends pattern (found it on sale here at Ram Wools. With shipping it's just over $5). I'll spin up some creamy white Merino in the next few weeks for that. Pefect fit for Project Spectrum!

February Baby Sweater V 2.0

I never introduced myself. I'm Wanett and I blog at http://knitology.blogspot.com. I am expecting twins very soon (they tried to come last week actually, you can check out my blog for details on that) I have a 17 month old son nicknamed Woodji and a nearly 6 year-old daughter nicknamed Missy cause she's so sassy ;).

This is the February Baby sweater from The Knitters Almanac for Baby girl A.



I know it looks different. I apparently lack the necessary brain function to knit lace and was lost and off pattern by the third row. I switched to SS and winged it. I love it. I added a row of eyelets to run a ribbon through as a closure.
Now I'm making a baby blue tomten for Baby boy B. I should have lots of progress due to all of the bed rest. More info about yarn used and such at this post.

Newborn Socks

I love knitting these little socks! I modified the pattern which can be found here. I omitted the K1, P1 detail in the leg, did an eye of partridge heel and a kitchener finish when I had 12 stitches left. Yarn is Brooklyn Handspun in Mocha Rose. Hooray for little feet!

Something for Baby

Just stopping in to show a quick knitted gift- All from Mason Dixon Knitting .
These have got to be some of the quickest, easiest knitting ever:

I used Cascade Cotton Rich for the bibs and Dream in Color Hanpainted Superwash for the "Heartbreakingly Cute Baby Kimono." So easy you could knit them in your sleep, or in less than a weekend.

Once Upon a Time

Ok, so this beret was knit awhile ago. But I still thought I'd share it as I'm putting the pattern on my blog (it's my own design.) I knit it for my daughter when she was about 8 months old, but it still fits her at 20 months. Not too bad for longevity!

bolero for a baby

I am sure that this pattern isn't news to anyone here, but the baby bolero in Leigh Radford's One Skein is super quick and super cute! I knit it up over the weekend for a friend due next month and the mom loved it!

Burberry Plaid-Inspired Baby Blanket

I'm not sure how much I cheated by making (and posting) a crocheted-rather-than-knitted baby item, but here it is! This project was a stash buster, and I'm really happy with how it turned out! The pattern is called "Special Delivery" from Candy Blankies by Candi Jensen. I'd made it out of the colors called for in the pattern a couple of years ago, but I always wondered how it would look in a more gender-neutral palette. Immediately I thought of the very chic and popular Burberry plaid that seemed to be everywhere a year or so ago. So, I made some different color choices, and I think the results are so cute! While I'm a knitter at heart, I like how fast crochet works up (and of course, it takes more yarn, so it's perfect for stash-busting!).

Knitting like crazy and had my baby!

In the last 3 weeks I finished these Fair-Isle pants for my toddler son. It's my first Fair-Isle project, and it started as a hat. I decided it would make a better pair of longies for him, but they're so cute, I use them as regular pants. I'm making him wear them almost every day until he outgrows them!
I also knit 2 hats for my friend who had twin girls, and while I was passing the time between contractions at home, I knit my son a little cap. I forgot to take pics of those, though.
I had my baby Sunday morning. She was 8lbs 110z and 21 in. She's a beautiful little girl. I can't wait to knit cute little girl stuff!
On the needles now: a sweater for me (yay, no more maternity clothes) and a soaker for the baby girl.

Little Green Pants

Teeny pants. We had to try them on every doll in the house to make sure they didn't fit anyone before the Squid could concede that they were for the baby, not a doll. Looking at them they look so funny. I'd forgotten how oddly shaped newborns are.

I've committed to (trying to) knit from stash and baby things are the perfect size for my billion single skeins. These are Mosaic Moon Organic Merino and simply cloud soft.

Check out these cute little booties that I finished today for my baby girl that was due yesterday.

My blogger friend Mary sent me a link to the pattern a month or so ago, thanks Mary! They are super cute, my daughter Corra wants to swipe them for her own baby doll.

A henley for my lemondrop

Looks like there's been a mini baby boom here this week ;0) Congrats to all the new mommies! I am 31 weeks along and can't wait to join you! Anyone else sleeping with a bottle of Tum's on their nightstand? Heehee!



Here's a belly shot with some new mitts I whipped up this week. I had more yarn leftover than I had hopped and so whipped up this teeny tiny henley from the 2 balls of leftover peruvian alpaca (from elann). I mostly made it up as I went along. Lucky for me it worked out okay ;0)

Soakers!

Made a couple of teeny tiny soakers. For those of you who aren't cloth diaper users, a "soaker" is a fitted diaper cover that is knit from wool. Wool is the perfect material for the job, given that it keeps moisture locked in, is a breathable, natural fiber, and doesn't feel clammy when damp. Not to mention the fact that little knitted soakers are very cute. Next up, pants.

I used some delicious yarn I had on hand - the "near solid" blue is an organic merino that makes you weep it's so soft, and the multi-hued purple, blue, and brown is another organic wool that is a bit sturdier. I used the merino for the trim. Both yarns come from Mosaic Moon and I adore the colors.

Another Pea Pod

After I abandoned it in favor of Christmas knitting, I finally got the finishing done on my Pea Pod sweater. I absolutely love it!



I used just under two balls of GGH Bali to make the smallest size. It's so sweet and soft and I cannot wait to have a baby to put in it.

Break out the Blue!

We found out this week that we're having another boy! I have my knitting cut out for me, though, because I have three very good (i.e. worth knitting for) friends due right around the same time. Two of them are having boys and the other doesn't know, yet. I've got to get crackin' for all of us! I love seeing everyone's projects here. Actually, I'm finding lots of great patterns that I didn't know about, which is awesome. Knit on, mommies!

Pretty in Pink

I'm Meg, and I'm due on May 4th (although I think I'm going to go in April!). This is my first post on the board. I've been lurking for sometime, but haven't had a finished object to share since I've joined.


This is the Hooded Blanket from Debbie Bliss's Baby Knits Book. I made it using Cashmerino Aran in Coral. It is so soft and cuddly, I can't wait to wrap my little girl up in it when she arrives!

Mason Dixon Baby Kimono

This turned out pretty well considering I used acrylic rather than cotton. (I'm trying to use up my old acrylic on baby clothes and such.) It does seem a bit stiff, so I'm considering "killing" it to see if that improves the drape. This is a quick, fun pattern, and I think it turns out really cute! This is too small for my guy, so I think I'll stash it away for my brother and SIL's baby due in May.

I Need an Opinion . . .

Do you think the February baby sweater from Elizabeth Zimmerman's Knitter's Almanac is gender neutral? (See one example here.) I'm a little unsure because of the lace pattern. I want to make something nice for a new niece or nephew due in the Spring, but since the parents-to-be have chosen to be surprised about the baby's sex, I'm not sure what to make. I know I could always do just stockinette instead of the lace pattern, but that seems a bit dull. Has anyone put a baby boy in this sweater? Do you think it works as a gender neutral garment if knit in white or cream (or maybe grey or navy)?

Simple Hat, a few questions.

Hi everyone! I love seeing all the cute things you've made, it keeps me inspired with all the baby knitting I want to do for friends. One thing I'd love to make is the Simple Hat from the Baby Knits for Beginners by Debbie Bliss, have any of you knit this? I'm hoping this is an ok place to ask a few questions! I'm noticing now that two sizes are listed, but there's no indication in the pattern of two sets of numbers, I hope the numbers are for the smaller one since that's what I'd like to knit. If any of you've knit this before I'd appreciate any insight on that.

I'm curious how much yarn was used (for the smaller size), I know the pattern says two balls, how much of the second ball did you use? I'm trying to do the math to subsitute yarns and I'd like to know if I need to go back to the store to get more! I'm going to use Patons SWS (I just bought a ball tonight and am drooling over this swatch, it is so delicious!).

Also, I'm going to be knitting it on dpns instead of flat, to avoid the seaming, do I need to do some extra number crunching to make that work or should it be ok (so long as I'm on gauge)?

Flying Geeze baby blanket

I've finally finished my Flying Geeze blanket. The pattern is from Mason Dixon Knitting (excellent book), but I changed the yarn and the gauge in order to get a very light-weight blanket.
Yarn: 170 g of sockweight 100 % merino wool which has not been chemically treated (i.e. not superwash - better for the baby and the environment). Note: Edging is merino/silk blend.
Needles: 5 mm dpn and circular

Perfect Hat For A Perfect Head

Last night I whipped up a little Umbilical Cord Hat (from the first Stitch 'N' Bitch book) for my cousin's aforementioned baby. Since he's a preemie and it's cold here, I figured one of these guys would be in order. I used the Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted in the Hawaii colourway that I had left over from a pair of slippers I made before Christmas. It's super soft and perfect for a baby hat (though I'm pretty sure that it's not machine washable) and a good colour for either a boy or a girl.

I have to say, I really love this pattern -- it's as perfect as it gets. Kudos to Jennifer L. Jones for designing it. I've probably made at least half a dozen of these things and it's the perfect baby gift, especially for Canadian babies. I made one for my now-two-year-old before she was born and we got so much use out of it. We had some feeding problems when she was new (I was a breastfeeding fascist and refused to break down and go for formula) and we had to go to the doctor every other day for the first two weeks that she was home with us. Since she was born in February and we lived in Toronto without a car, she really needed a good toque for the walks/cab rides to the doctor's office. And the Umbilical Cord Hat did the job. Plus, you can make one over the course of an evening.

Hello to Everyone!

I was so happy to find this group. You all have provided very good motivation for me to get working on my baby knitting. I'm due March 18th, and with a move from New York to Amsterdam a few short months ago, starting a new job, learning a new language, and then another move within Amsterdam, life has been a trifle hectic!

As soon as I unpack my camera and the new internet connection is installed at home, I'll be sure to post photos of the baby blanket I'm working on. I'm quite proud of the design. It's a double knitted blanket, with the American flag on one side and Dutch flag on the other. Very appropriate for the tiny bundle we're expecting who will have dual American/Dutch citizenship. I'm going to have to knit like mad in order for the blanket to be finished before our little one's arrival. Double knitting takes SO much longer than I expected!

And just in case I find myself with a extra time (still deluding myself) does any one have a really pretty, girly newborn sweater pattern they'd like to recommend? Something with a little lace or cabling or pretty trim would be awfully nice.

And thanks for the "virtual" company while I'm pregnant so far from home. It's been comforting.

Some knitting and some worry

I finished knitting up the cardi finally for the woman at work, and it fits her son well. I still haven't started anything for my wee one yet that's due on 1/18. I'll be posting pictures soon on my blog here.

Now I'm not in a panic over that, but there is some worry. He's in a breech position, and although he has room to move, it's disconcerting since there's only a week until my due date. Any other moms have this problem? I'm looking for some reassurance that he can and probably will still turn. He's also posterior, which is why they always have a hard time finding his heartbeat. It's easier if his back was up, but since it's down against my back, they always have to search for it.

I need to pick up some green and work on this pattern for him, because it's just too cute to pass up. I might also do a cardi for him in green and see if I can find some turtle or frog buttons.

Hat to Match

Ths hat goes with the boots in the previous entry, knitted from Berroco Suede. I knitted them all at the same time in the same size but the hat must have been a bit big as she's only wearing it now, one year later. I'm pretty sure I knitted a baby size but you can see the ear flaps fasten under her chin.

Here she is wearing the hat on a windy day out at St Andrews, Scotland in January 2007. Isn't it clever the way the wind has blown her coat up to show the matching lining?

Baby Uggs

I knitted these for Cara when she was about six months old. It's the famous Knitty Gritty pattern at http://tinyurl.com/dox3w I knitted them from Berroco Suede and chose these pinks instead of the natural shades. I bought the yarn in natural shades too but didn't get round to knitting them up, so I need some ideas for what else to do with Berroco Suede.

I think they fell off a lot but they were very cute when they were on.

Baby Bear

My break from holiday knitting was short lived, as my cousin, who was originally due in early February gave birth to a baby boy a full month early! Not to worry, the little guy is doing fine and after a week in the hospital, he's going home tomorrow. I managed to quickly finish this bear for him from Jess Hutch's Unusual Toys For You To Knit And Enjoy.

I feel bad that I'm constantly posting everywhere about these toys (there are plenty more of them over on my blog) since Jess' booklet is much coveted and long out of print, but they're so fun to knit. If you don't have the booklet and are interested in these toys, I think there's a free bunny pattern up on Jess's site and you can also knit the Kate kitty from the Knitty site. Either way, I made this dude out of Cascade 220 and I hope he will be loved by the new baby.

Infant Spiral Socks

I made these infant spiral socks last week. I had seen this type of heel-less sock in a few different old pattern books from the 40s and 50s, had some extra sock yarn laying around, and decided to try them out. They are interesting because since they have no heel, it seems they grow with the child. They start out more like stockings on the baby, then end up being regular length socks when they are toddlers or older. My 3 1/2 year-old son tried them on and they fit him fine, but maybe are a little bit shorter than his regualr socks. (He also told me he wants a heel. Guess I'll have to start on a pair of regular socks for him!)
They were fun to make and a quick knit. I look forward to trying them on the baby - who is due this Saturday!

Size: 0-3 months, to fit a size 16" chest.

notes: I had a *bit* of a problem reading the pattern, this might have something to do with my inability to concentrate lately. I'm not sure if I knit the right front and the sleeves correctly. The right front looks a bit wonky to me. With that said, this is a sweet little sweater.

I wrote more about finishing this sweater, and the knitter's baby superstition on my blog. I sure hope finishing this sweater isn't going to bite me in the butt!

Christmas Knitting

I thought you might like an update on my Christmas baby knitting - I have four friends now with children under three and another baby on the way, lots of knitting for Aunty Ruth!
Firstly, here is baby Hattie on the crocheted blanket I made her. Square were from 200 Knitted Blocks and were made in Jaeger Aqua Cotton.
Second is the Cosy Tank Top (age 2-3) from Lucinda Guy's "And so to bed" book in YC Cashsoft. This is my favourite knit so far, and luckily the little girl it was destined for loves it (but also won't take it off, which could prove tricky!)

Next is another Tank Top, this time for Hattie (pictured above). The pattern comes from Louisa Harding's "Natural Knits" book. I used the left over RYC from the above project. It is lovely and soft and such a treat having a hint of cashmere in it!
And finally, for Toby, Kai from the same Natural Knits book. This is in a ggh cotton/acrylic mix that washes really well. He looked fab in it!

Mary Jane Booties

I ran across a booklet called "Knitting for Babies: Blankets, Booties, Bibs, & More" in the magazine section at Wal-Mart yesterday, and I just couldn't resist the pattern for these cute Mary Jane booties. I used Lion Brand Microspun in Fuchsia from my stash. I think they are just too cute!

Introduction

Hi everyone!

My name is Sharon. I am expecting my third child in May, a little girl. We already have an 8 yo daughter and 5 yo son.

I have been doing some baby knitting for the past year as a few friends have had babies, but now it is time to knit for my own. I've got a couple things in progress, but no good photos yet...I will post those soon :)

I am so happy to have come across this blog and have spent the last few days looking at all the wonderful things you have all made for the little bundles of joy, I am looking forward to sharing my accomplishments with you.

A baby is born!

I just wanted to post that we got to meet our baby on 2nd january. The last few days have been a blur. We got home yesterday and I have only managed to get a few hours on the computer between feeds and naps. Most of that time has been spent sending out birth announcements and thank you notes.

I finally completed a post on my own blog with the birth story and a few pictures.



I am sure I will have more knitting news soon, but as it stands right now, I have not knitted any baby things for the past few weeks.

I just finished a vest for my baby boy who is due March 24th...

I knitted the 12 month size.
Missions Falls 1824 wool... less than one skein per color.
Size 6 & 7 circular needles (knitted flat)
Two adorable pewter teddy bear buttons.

The seams are *alright* After three years of knitting, this is my first seamed garment.

Other than this, I've knitted a pinwheel baby blanket ...



Pinwheel Baby Blanket, free pattern found here. Approx. 4 hanks of Cherry Tree Hill Supersock Merino... two solid, two variegated. Size 7 needles progressing from DPNs up to size 60" addi circs.

So far that's it! I'd love to knit a few more of the Mission Falls patterns, they're so cute!
