Hello to Everyone!
I was so happy to find this group. You all have provided very good motivation for me to get working on my baby knitting. I'm due March 18th, and with a move from New York to Amsterdam a few short months ago, starting a new job, learning a new language, and then another move within Amsterdam, life has been a trifle hectic!
As soon as I unpack my camera and the new internet connection is installed at home, I'll be sure to post photos of the baby blanket I'm working on. I'm quite proud of the design. It's a double knitted blanket, with the American flag on one side and Dutch flag on the other. Very appropriate for the tiny bundle we're expecting who will have dual American/Dutch citizenship. I'm going to have to knit like mad in order for the blanket to be finished before our little one's arrival. Double knitting takes SO much longer than I expected!
And just in case I find myself with a extra time (still deluding myself) does any one have a really pretty, girly newborn sweater pattern they'd like to recommend? Something with a little lace or cabling or pretty trim would be awfully nice.
And thanks for the "virtual" company while I'm pregnant so far from home. It's been comforting.

Hi Erica! I'm due this month with a little boy, so I'm envious of you having a girl...there are so many pretty things to knit for little girls! Here's a pattern I ran across and think it would be beautiful: http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/PATTreid.html It's sized for a 2-yr-old, but I'm sure you could downsize it for a baby. Good luck wtih the double knitting and new language.
Debbie Bliss has a beautiful dress for little girls in her book Baby Knits, and the book Simple Knits for Cherished Babies has a smocked dress that I really wished I was having a girl so I could have knit it.
I don't know if they is girly enough for you. The little raglan touches made it seem girly to me (but I'm not very girly) and it was a really fun pattern to do as it is all in one piece. Plus it was an actual newborn size which I have found kind of rare. They may say newborn but they are all big. This was small enough for a newborn. cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/50678AD.html
I second the suggestion for Debbie Bliss, I made a dress and a boat neck sweater from it. The sweater I edged in red and knit in cream and did a textured heart on the front. Then, I made a hat with a heart on it out of the red and slippers out of the cream and dressed my daughter in the whole ensemble with a onesie underneath and black pants. I made the dress in an apricot with a black ribbon. You can see pictures here, at the bottom of the post, and here. I really should take a better photo of the whole set and post it.
I would also suggest the 5 hr baby sweater, I think it is more appropriate for a girl than a boy, and that can be found with a simple search online and is free. Also, there is a v-neck baby jacket/cardigan that is available online for free that can be very girly if you knit with girly yarn and embellish it. I made it with a purple colorway and used ribbon roses for the buttons.
I'm due March 18th, too! And it's a girl. Woo hoo! Happy unpacking and happy knitting!
I think the sweater in Zimmerman's Knitter's Almanac is lovely, and very feminine.
