General tips

Does anyone know of an online resource about embroidering handknits? I'd like to embroider something on the front of the sweater I'm working on, but that's not part of the original pattern, and I really don't want to mess it up after the knitting is done.
Last but not least, I'm thinking of making a matching hat for the sweater, also approximately in the 6-12 month size. Do you think I-cord ties on the bottom of the hat would be a good idea to keep the hat on, or a bad idea as a potential choking hazard?
